Second in a series
Much was at stake on the night of June 8, 2004, when the Chancellors and San Pedro took the field in the Los Angeles Section City final at Dodger Stadium.
Chatsworth went into the matchup with a 34-0 record and ranked No. 1 in the country by USA Today, Baseball America and StudentSports. A perfect season and a second consecutive mythical national title were on the line.
The Chancellors were up to the task.
Senior right-hander Jason Dominguez (13-0) scattered five hits, struck out seven batters and held the Pirates scoreless until the seventh inning to lead the Chancellors, 7-1, in front of about 3,500.
Chatsworth scored in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out single by junior first baseman Tom Cassidy that drove in senior second baseman Willie Cabrera from third base.
The Chancellors added four runs in the second inning, including run-scoring singles by junior center fielder Mitul Patel and freshman third baseman Matt Dominguez. It was Dominguez’s 65th run batted in, a state single-season record for a freshman.
Cabrera gave the Chancellors a 7-0 cushion with a two-run single in the sixth inning that extended his state-record season total to 72 hits.
The Chancellors, who had agreed not to get haircuts until they lost a game, finally could go visit a barber.
